How To Decide On A Niche

A niche market is, in simple terms your audience and your audience will be the people that are interested in the subject matter of your website.
This raises two questions as you decide what your niche market is.
  1. What am I going to write about?
  2. Who are my target audience?
These two questions need to be addressed and decided upon before you start. You wouldn’t start a long car journey without knowing what your destination is or having directions on how to get there.
Now you may be a florist and want to write about plants and flowers so your target audience will be anyone interested in plants and flowers.
Now that is a lot of people to target and they will be hard to find because some will only be interested in houseplants, others only interested in plants for the garden and others only interested in flowers for their wedding or for a hotel they run. The niche here, is way too big and as the saying goes you cannot please all of the people all of the time but you can please some of the people, some of the time.
In this example you would need to narrow down your niche. What part of flowers and plants are you interested in and what do you know most about? so let’s say it’s houseplants. Now your niche market or audience has become easier to target and to communicate with.
This can be applied to any subject and you may be thinking that you have lots of hobbies or areas of expertise and cannot decide which to go with. My advice is to:
1. Write a list of all of your ideas and make sure you whittle each broad subject down to a smaller niche.
2.  Give each a score out of ten in terms of your enthusiasm for the subject and a score out of ten for your knowledge on the subject.
Then go with the one with the highest score. If you have two the same go with enthusiasm. Having fun and enjoying writing content will make for better reading and engagement with your audience.
Select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.
You can learn about the subject as you go along. Being an expert is not essential as you can become one as you create your website.
It is also useful to now think about who your target audience is. Are they male or female? What is their age range? Education level? Industry? Marital status?
These are just a few and each niche will have a different demographic. It may be that they cannot be pin pointed at this stage but as you build your network you will discover your audience and more easily be able to pinpoint their TYPE for want of a better word. Take a look at my post on how to get more customers for your business. It will explain identifying the TYPE in more detail.
A few things that you should understand about niches are:
You are going to be writing content about your niche
You are going to be communicating with your niche market
You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
You are going to be helping people within your niche.
Your first niche PROBABLY won’t be your last (don’t worry about it being perfect)
Any niche website can become a full time income or business
There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.
Niches can always change. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next hour maximum you should have decided upon your niche. Do not get in to the paralysis of analysis.
If you are really stuck at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. Take a look at my post Wealthy affiliate an honest review  or head straight to their site and sign up for free and take a look around.
